Bottled water is not better
An industry watchdog group analyzed 103 brands of bottled water, more
than 25 percent contained chemical or microbiological contaminants exceeding
WHO drinking water guidelines. Most bottled water sold in the world today
comes from municipal water supplies. - The Natural Resources Defense Council
conducted a four-year review of the bottled water industry and the safety
standards that govern it, including a comparison of national bottled water
rules with national tap water rules, and independent testing of over 1,000
bottles of water. NRDC conclusion is that there is no assurance that just
because water comes out of a bottle it is any cleaner or safer than water
from the tap. And in fact, an estimated 25 percent or more of bottled water
is really just tap water in a bottle -- sometimes further treated, sometimes
not.
Tap water is not safe
According to the reports, more than 100 million families are the world
drink water from municipal systems that violate health standards. One recent
study reveals pharmaceutical drugs have been detected in the drinking water
supplies of 50 major metropolitan. These drugs include birth control,
chemotherapy and hundreds of other pharmaceutical prescriptions that cannot
be removed by any municipal or bottled water process. In addition, an
estimated 10 million household water supplies may fail to meet the drinking
water standards. Chlorine levels in most municipal water systems exceed the
maximum allowable chlorine levels
for swimming pools.
Pure drinking water scarcity
Today over a billion people do not have access to clean drinking water
and by 2025 at least 3 billion people in 90 different countries are expected
to face severe fresh drinking water problems.
